Description
Production
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a white, powdery mineral commonly used as a pigment in a wide range of industrial and consumer products. It has excellent light-scattering properties, which make it ideal for use in paints, coatings, plastics, inks, and paper. TiO2 is also used as a UV absorber in sunscreen and other personal care products, as well as in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
TiO2 is produced by several methods, including the sulfate process, the chloride process, and the hydrothermal synthesis method. The sulfate process is currently the most widely used method, which involves the reaction of titanium ore with sulfuric acid to produce a solution of titanium sulfate. The solution is then purified, filtered, and calcined at high temperatures to produce TiO2 pigment.
